Sadia arrived at the station. “Sorry I’m late. I had to reanalyze the data.”
“What’ve you got?” Quinn asked.
“I think I know what the problem is,” a three-dimensional image of the planet appeared. On it, they saw a mass of energy on the screen circling the sphere-shaped planet. “And I was finally able to study the data scans and make some sense of it,”
“An intense ion field in the upper atmosphere,” Keiko said surmising. “The damn thing shouldn’t even be there.”
“Is it impossible to scan through it?” Quinn looked to Sadia.
“Damn good question.”
“Scan through, Ion fields aren’t found in nature.” Keiko asserted. “Something had to cause this.”
“Come to order team. Our first concern is finding Stewart.” Quinn demanded as he signaled the control room. “Eric please report on the status of the search team.”
“Our two Lady bug flyers are already in the air. The heavy-duty transport is fueled and ready as is the Mothman Shuttle.”
“Those convict girls Will be piloting,” Doris complained loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Why won’t you just shut up,” Eric yelled at her.
“I can call them convicts if I want, because they are.”
“Easy there, you two.” Quinn advised having heard the exchange from Flight control.
“Don’t look at me that way Eric,” Doris sulked. “We’re the ones who should be piloting the shuttle.”
Eric tried hard to ignore her. Quinn decided to confront them both directly. “Is there a problem between you two?”
“No sir,” Travers assured him.
“I’m surprised at you Travers,” Quinn said. “And who’s supposed to pilot the Horizon?” he said joking, “Me?”
“Heaven forbid,” Travers said under her breathe.
“Quinn out,” He turned to see Keiko staring at him. “Let’s hear it. You have permission to speak freely.”
Conrad was not thrilled to hear that. “Let’s not start that again.” He said rolling his eyes.
“Last time it turned out to be lightning hitting the ions in the atmosphere. And if its ion wouldn’t the Computer be affected?” Keiko said looking to the others.
“But that’s just it.” Sadia gushed. “The computer can now distinguish between the two. Whatever it is it’s not lightning.
“Listen let’s not go looking for trouble.” Conrad added.
“Computer report,” Quinn said aloud.
PLEASE REFER TO ME AS MOTHER
“Shit… come the F on.” Conrad blurted.
“Calm down chief.” He ordered. “Mother please report,”
HUMAN LIFE FORMS HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED
“Mother what exactly do you have?”
IDENTIFIED ALIEN SPIECES MAY HAVE ORION GENESIS
“But no Orion ships were found in orbit.” Conrad insisted.
“Mother, please continue with your analysis.” Quinn sighed. “That would put us in a difficult position.”
“I say we stay hidden for now.” Conrad advised.
“Sir, the hell with this observation shit.” Sadia blurted. “If our people are down there we need to help them.”
“Thank you, Sadia, for your honest opinion and I appreciate your candor. Mother have you located Major Stewart?”
INDICATION THE MAJOR IS IN THE VILLAGE THE SEARCH TEAM SHOULD BE SENT THERE
“Not a peep of trouble from him.” Conrad contradicted.
“That’s close enough. “Quinn Snapped, “Get a bird in the air. Pete, it’s time to break radio silence and attempt to contact Stewart. Chief arm the shuttle team. The last thing I want is them walking into an ambush.”
